Russell Brand is a British comedian, actor, author and broadcaster known for Big Brother’s Big Mouth, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. His later work has focused on books, podcasting and online commentary. As of 3 October 2026, he is also awaiting a criminal trial in London on seven charges involving alleged sexual offences against six women. He has pleaded not guilty to every charge, and the trial is scheduled to begin on 12 October.
His public career has moved across several distinct settings: British entertainment television, American film comedy, autobiographical writing and political and religious broadcasting. Those professional changes provide the background to a public profile now receiving renewed attention ahead of the court proceedings.
Russell Brand’s age and early broadcasting career
Born on 4 June 1975, Brand is 51 as of 3 October 2026. His date of birth appears in Crown Prosecution Service records. The Crown Prosecution Service
He grew up in Essex and developed a career combining stand-up comedy with television presenting. By 2006, his work included Big Brother’s Big Mouth, the audience-discussion programme associated with the reality series, and MTV’s 1 Leicester Square. He also hosted the NME Awards that year.
These presenting roles were separate from his work as a touring comedian. His publisher’s account of that period records a sold-out UK stand-up tour alongside his television and radio commitments. In 2007, he hosted the Brit Awards and participated in presenting Comic Relief.
Radio became another substantial part of his career. The Russell Brand Show aired on BBC Radio 2 as a Saturday-night programme featuring conversation and comedy with a co-host. An Ofcom adjudication records that the programme had been running on the station for approximately two years by October 2008.
The regulator subsequently sanctioned the BBC over October 2008 broadcasts containing offensive references to actor Andrew Sachs and his granddaughter. Ofcom found that their privacy had been unwarrantably infringed. That was a broadcasting standards matter, distinct from the criminal charges brought years later.
From British television to Hollywood films
Brand’s film career gave him a different audience from his British presenting work. In the 2008 comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he played Aldous Snow, a fictional rock musician involved with the former girlfriend of Jason Segel’s character, Peter.
The film also featured Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis. The British Film Institute’s account of Forgetting Sarah Marshall identifies Snow as the character Brand later reprised in Get Him to the Greek.
Released in 2010, Get Him to the Greek placed that character at the centre of a new story. Jonah Hill played an aspiring music executive tasked with bringing Snow from London to Los Angeles for a comeback concert within 72 hours.
Nicholas Stoller directed the film, whose cast also included Elisabeth Moss, Rose Byrne and Colm Meaney. The connection between the two films is the returning character of Aldous Snow; the musician’s fictional experiences should not be read as biographical facts about the actor.
Brand’s subsequent screen work included Arthur in 2011, directed by Jason Winer and featuring Helen Mirren and Greta Gerwig. These credits establish his work in American film comedy alongside, rather than as an extension of, his British television presenting career.
Books, recovery writing and religious interests
Writing has remained another strand of Brand’s public work. His autobiography My Booky Wook recounts his early life and experiences before and during his rise in entertainment. Its publisher describes a narrative encompassing his Essex upbringing, performance training, broadcasting and substance use. These are subjects of his autobiographical account, rather than a basis for assumptions about his present health.
In 2017, he published Recovery: Freedom from Our Addictions. The book draws on his own account of addiction and recovery, presenting his interpretation of the twelve-step approach associated with recovery fellowships.
Macmillan’s description makes clear that the book combines personal experience with advice. It extends beyond alcohol and drugs to discuss behaviour, relationships, work and attachment. Its significance within his career is the move from recounting his experiences to offering a self-help framework based on them.
His more recent publishing has focused explicitly on religion. His official website promotes How to Become a Christian in 7 Days as an account of his conversion to Christianity. The book appears in the 2026 catalogue of Tucker Carlson Books.
That description reflects Brand’s stated religious identity and the subject of the publication. It does not establish anything about the separate allegations being considered by the courts.
Marriages and family background
Brand married American singer Katy Perry in 2010. Their divorce followed in 2012. Reuters continues to identify that marriage as part of his public biography, alongside his film and broadcasting work.
He married Laura Gallacher in August 2017. Sky News reported the marriage after he discussed it on his Radio X podcast. Their daughter attended the ceremony.
The documented marriage is a straightforward part of his biography; descriptions of the couple’s private dynamics or emotional lives require more than wedding coverage or public photographs. His family members’ lives are also separate from his own professional record and the allegations against him.
Online commentary and recent public appearances
By the early 2020s, Brand’s public output had shifted substantially towards online broadcasting. Reuters describes his later work as concentrating on subjects including American politics and freedom of speech.
Associated Press reporting in February 2026 also described videos combining wellness topics, conspiracy theories and discussion of religious belief. These subjects differ from the film performances and entertainment presenting that first established his mainstream profile.
He has continued making public appearances. On 29 September 2026, he moderated a discussion at the Make America Healthy Again summit in Washington, according to The Times. Participants included Mehmet Oz and Medicaid official Dan Brillman. The appearance forms part of his recent involvement in American political and health-related discussion.
Russell Brand’s court case: The position in October 2026
The criminal proceedings began with charges authorised in April 2025 following a Metropolitan Police investigation. The CPS said the investigation followed allegations reported by Channel 4, The Sunday Times and The Times in September 2023.
The Crown Prosecution Service’s December 2025 announcement confirmed two additional charges involving two further women. Taken together, the proceedings concern alleged offences between 1999 and 2009 involving six women.
The seven charges comprise three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. Brand has pleaded not guilty to all seven. ce
According to ITV News’s report on the revised trial timetable, a judge moved the trial from June to 12 October 2026 and joined the two sets of charges. Reporting published in late September continued to identify 12 October as the scheduled start date.
As of this article’s 3 October 2026 update, the trial remains forthcoming. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt. The CPS has emphasised his right to a fair trial and explained that its charging decisions determine whether allegations should be presented to a criminal court; they do not determine guilt.
