From Philadelphia to television
Born in Philadelphia on April 14, 1977, McElhenney is 49 as of September 29, 2026. He grew up in South Philadelphia, the city that later provided the setting for his best-known series.
His early acting work preceded the project that made him widely recognisable. The crucial collaboration came with Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, who worked with him on the material that became It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
They filmed an early version using a camcorder. That modest beginning developed into a television series that premiered on FX in 2005, with its creators retaining substantial involvement in writing, producing and performing.
The transition was not immediately financially comfortable. In a later interview, he recalled continuing to work as a waiter during the first season because the programme’s future remained uncertain.
Building It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows a group of self-interested characters associated with Paddy’s Pub. Its principal ensemble includes Day as Charlie, Howerton as Dennis, Olson as Dee, Danny DeVito as Frank and McElhenney as Mac.
His responsibilities extend beyond playing one member of that group. FX identifies him as the programme’s creator, showrunner, executive producer and writer. A showrunner oversees a television series’ creative direction and production, making his contribution much broader than an acting credit.
The distinction matters when looking at his career. Always Sunny gave him an enduring screen role, but it also established him as someone who develops and manages television projects.
The programme’s continuing collaboration is another defining feature. Day and Howerton have remained involved as performers, writers and executive producers, while Olson’s Dee is a central part of the ensemble. The series therefore connects several long-running professional partnerships rather than representing the work of one performer alone.
Why Rob McElhenney now goes by Rob Mac
The shorter name is a professional change, not a different actor. In 2025, his representative confirmed that he had filed to change his name legally to Rob Mac. FX now uses that name in its cast materials.
He discussed the decision in a joint Variety interview with Kaitlin Olson. He explained that his surname could be difficult to pronounce, particularly as his business and storytelling work expanded into other languages and regions.
The change can cause confusion because his Always Sunny character is also called Mac. However, the professional name applies to his work outside the sitcom too, including his football ownership and documentary production.
Older television credits, interviews and coverage remain under his previous surname. More recent official announcements about Wrexham and forthcoming television projects identify him as Rob Mac.
Marriage to Kaitlin Olson and their children
McElhenney and Olson met through It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where she was cast as Dee. They married on September 27, 2008.
The couple have two sons: Axel, born in 2010, and Leo, born in 2012. Both parents have spoken publicly about family life, including their children becoming old enough to watch the programme that brought them together.
Their shared sitcom is only one part of their professional lives. Olson also stars in High Potential and has appeared in Hacks. Those performances are her own career achievements, separate from her husband’s production work and sporting interests.
Their public interviews offer an account of balancing established careers with parenthood. They have continued working together on Always Sunny while pursuing projects beyond it.
Mythic Quest and a different workplace comedy
Alongside his work on Always Sunny, McElhenney co-created Mythic Quest with Charlie Day and Megan Ganz. The Apple TV+ comedy centres on the people working at a video-game development studio.
He plays Ian Grimm, while Charlotte Nicdao plays Poppy Li. Their characters’ creative partnership places the process of making a game at the centre of the programme, alongside office relationships, clashing egos and business pressures.
Apple’s official announcement for the fourth season identifies him as both a co-creator and executive producer. That season began on January 29, 2025.
The series ended after four seasons. In April 2025, its executive producers announced its conclusion and explained that the final episode would receive an updated ending to provide a farewell.
The related anthology Side Quest arrived in March 2025. Its four episodes explored separate stories involving employees, players and fans affected by the fictional game, extending the setting beyond the main programme’s regular office ensemble.
Wrexham AFC and the partnership with Ryan Reynolds
Rob McElhenney became involved in professional football through Wrexham AFC, the club based in North Wales. His takeover with Ryan Reynolds was confirmed on February 9, 2021.
Wrexham is a Welsh club competing in the English football league system. Under their ownership, the men’s team achieved three consecutive promotions, reaching the Championship for the 2025–26 season. The Championship is the second tier, immediately below the Premier League.
Their ownership has also brought investment partners into the club. In December 2025, Apollo Sports Capital announced a minority investment, with Mac and Reynolds continuing as controlling owners.
The announcement included financing to support redevelopment of the club’s stadium. It therefore concerned both the football organisation and its facilities, rather than simply a change in the names associated with ownership.
Their roles should also be distinguished from those of players and coaching staff. Mac and Reynolds are owners and co-chairmen; the team’s performances are delivered by the football operation.
Welcome to Wrexham and his continuing television work
Welcome to Wrexham documents the club, its supporters and the surrounding community, alongside the owners’ involvement. Mac serves as an executive producer as well as appearing in the series.
In April 2026, Disney announced a three-season renewal for Welcome to Wrexham, taking the documentary through an eighth season. Its fifth season launched in the UK on Disney+ on May 15, 2026.
The documentary gives his football involvement a separate television dimension. Viewers encounter a real club and community rather than a scripted sporting story, while his production role connects the project to his established work behind the camera.
His announced projects also include FX’s Far Cry, based on Ubisoft’s video-game franchise. FX identifies him as a star and executive producer, with Noah Hawley also executive producing. Alongside Always Sunny and Welcome to Wrexham, it extends a career that encompasses performing, creating programmes and overseeing their production.
